Depicted as a fetus, the moon is printed on thermal paper—the same type used for ultrasound images. One day it occurred to me that I had a telescope in storage at my parents' house, so I contacted my mother and asked her to send it to my place in Tokyo. The room where I live faces south, and since there are no buildings around it that block the hakudo(literally, “white path”), I can watch the moon day and night on days with nice weather. I would leave the telescope out by the window and spend days on end looking at the moon.  January 2, 2020. That day the moon was a little less than half-moon, and I noticed it shining in the southwest sky through the frosted glass window. As usual, I pointed the telescope at the moon and looked through its eyepiece. In its center, surrounded by the blacked-out corners as though by vignetting, the image of the moon at that instant reminded me of a baby in a fetal position. From this day on, I have begun to see the moon as a fetus captured in an ultrasound photo.
